West Coast Customs To Recreate First Ever Mitsubishi Model A Using An Outlander PHEV

http://www.carscoops.com/2017/04/west-c ... first.html

Mitsubishi Motors North America announced its partnership with West Coast Customs to recreate the original Mitsubishi Model A, using the platform of an Outlander PHEV.

The purpose behind the whole project is to celebrate Mitsubishi's centennial anniversary as it's been 100 years since the world met the 1917 Model A.

“The Mitsubishi Model A is the vehicle that paved the way for many other unique and exciting models over the years and we're excited to re-design it with West Coast Customs,” said Francine Harsini, senior director, marketing at Mitsubishi North America.

“The Mitsubishi Model A will feature all the distinctive aspects of the 1917 vehicle, but will be built on the PHEV platform and offer the latest in automotive technology.”

The car is currently being built at West Coast Customs' facilities in Burbank and is expected to be finished this summer, with its debut scheduled to take place on an episode of the ‘Inside West Coast Customs' TV show.

“It is an incredibly exciting opportunity to be able to integrate the history of the original Mitsubishi Model A with the technology of current-day Mitsubishi vehicles to recreate the Mitsubishi Model A,” said West Coast Customs CEO and Founder, Ryan Friedlinghaus. “Team members in every department of West Coast Customs are super excited to be involved with this build - truly a piece of automotive history.”

Mitusbishi Could Launch New Sedan And Pickup In U.S.

http://www.carscoops.com/2017/05/mitusb ... n-and.html

Mitsubishi's new chief operating officer has a host of plans for the company's future and is pondering bringing a new sedan and pickup to the U.S.

With the company revitalized by entering into the Renault-Nissan Alliance, Mitsubishi is expected to return a full-year profit for the year ending March 31, a dramatic turnaround from internal forecasts prior to Trevor Mann becoming the new COO.

Speaking to Automotive News, Mann revealed that the United States as well as China and Southeast Asia are considered as the primary drivers of its ongoing recovery and is well aware of the added flexibility the automaker has after partnering with Renault and Nissan.

According to Mann, it would be conceivable for a pickup based around a Nissan platform to be launched while Renault-Nissan could also receive a tap on the shoulder to help Mitsubishi create a new sedan in the wake of the Lancer's impending death.

“It's something that we should look at. As we go forward and start to have common platforms, an alliance pickup platform would be quite an appropriate thing for us to do,” Mann said.

As it stands, Mitsubishi already offers a pickup overseas, including in Australia and Japan where it is badged the Triton. Bringing a similar model to the U.S. could prove to be a winning move by the marque.

Beyond the potential of these two new vehicles, Mann suggested that it could restart manufacturing in North America after shutting down its sole facility on the continent last year.

“One of the things that we have to start looking at is perhaps further industrialization. We don't have a plant in the U.S. anymore. Maybe using Nissan's capacity,” he said.

Mitsubishi considers new pickup, sedan for US market

Nissan could use some of its own factory capacity to return Mitsubishi manufacturing to the US.

Mitsubishi has continued to release more details of its US revitalization strategy, which could include several new models and increased local production.

The brand's future in the US has been shrouded in doubts. After vowing in 2012 to double output from its Illinois assembly plant, the company quickly changed course and shuttered the factory by late 2015 despite growing US sales in recent years.

The company is now under the leadership of Trevor Mann, installed as its new chief executive after his former employer, Nissan, acquired a controlling stake in its scandal-afflicted Japanese competitor. The bailout raised concerns that Mitsubishi might be forced to scale back its US commitment to avoid overlap with Nissan, but the new chief executive actually plans to increase its presence in the country.

Speaking to Automotive News in a recent interview, Mann hinted that Mitsubishi is considering adding a new pickup and a sedan to its US lineup. The incoming models could be based on existing Renault-Nissan Alliance platforms, however, to minimize development costs. Plans to return Mitsubishi production to America will also presumably involve existing Nissan factories.
"As we go forward and start to have common platforms, an alliance pickup platform would be quite an appropriate thing for us to do," he said.

Rumors point to a jointly-developed architecture that could underpin both the next-generation Nissan Navara (Frontier) and Mitsubishi L200 midsize pickups. Mann previously suggested the companies might also share a common platform when designing replacements for the Nissan Patrol (Armada) and Mitsubishi Pajero SUVs.

Mann plots a U.S. revival for Mitsubishi . COO weighs new products, will add dealers

TOKYO -- Six months after taking operating control of Mitsubishi Motors Corp., Trevor Mann has put the carmaker back onto a profit trajectory.

Mann may also consider using Nissan Motor Co.'s products and North American factory capacity to revive Mitsu-bishi's U.S. fortunes.

Mitsubishi was bracing for its first operating loss in more than a decade when Mann became COO in November. But within three months, he cut purchasing costs and ramped up savings by combining efforts with Nissan.

Mitsubishi instead now expects to show a full-year profit for the fiscal year that ended March 31, Mann says.

The British-born Mann stepped into Mitsubishi's beleaguered operations last year at the direction of Nissan's then-CEO Carlos Ghosn after Nissan acquired a controlling 34 percent interest.

In an interview, Mann said that specific plans for Mitsubishi's future are being worked out. But he said the United States, China and Southeast Asia would be the main drivers of its recovery.

The Nissan partnership gives Mitsubishi new latitude to undertake plans that would have been impossible for the cash-strapped automaker acting alone. Mann said Mitsubishi may examine new vehicles such as a sedan or pickup for the U.S. The carmaker may also re-establish a factory footprint in North America, after pulling the plug on its only U.S. assembly plant last year.

Mann also wants to expand Mitsubishi's U.S. dealer network to stoke sales. The brand has 362 U.S. franchises.

"We need to start to grow. We need to start to improve our network," he said, adding that Mitsubishi will consider a range of possibilities. "We can reopen many things."

Known inside Nissan as a production and cost-control guru, Mann is directing a contingent of Nissan executives dispatched by Ghosn to turn Mitsubishi around. Ghosn is now chairman of Nissan and Mitsubishi.

Mann said Mitsubishi will unveil its blueprint for rebuilding in September or October, coinciding with the release of midterm business plans by alliance partners Nissan and Renault SA.

The strategy is not in concrete, but Mann forecasts a 20 percent increase in U.S. sales for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2018. That would bring Mitsubishi to about 120,000 vehicles. The U.S. was Mitsubishi's single biggest market last year.

Sales will get a lift from some new products, including the arrival this year of the Outlander PHEV plug-in hybrid crossover and the Eclipse Cross compact crossover.

U.S. ambitions

But Mitsubishi will be thin on other fresh offerings for the near term, Mann warned.

The key to pushing U.S. sales higher, he said, will be taking advantage of Mitsubishi's lineup of crossovers and all-wheel-drive products amid booming demand for the segment.

"The answer to your prayers is not just adding nameplates," Mann, 56, said by phone from Bekasi, Indonesia, where he was opening a Mitsubishi plant that had been planned before the merger with Nissan. "You've got to make sure the nameplates you've got are working for you. And we've got scope for improvement."

Further ahead in the U.S., Mitsubishi could tap Nissan or Renault for help covering the sedan segment, Mann said. Mitsubishi may also consider a pickup, possibly on a Nissan platform.

"It's something that we should look at," he said. "As we go forward and start to have common platforms, an alliance pickup platform would be quite an appropriate thing for us to do."

Mitsubishi may also consider North American manufacturing again, possibly through a Nissan plant. "One of the things that we have to start looking at is perhaps further industrialization," he said. "We don't have a plant in the U.S. anymore. Maybe using Nissan's capacity."

Mitsubishi shuttered its only North American assembly plant last year in Normal, Ill., making the Japanese automaker purely an import player and more exposed to currency swings.

Mitsubishi took a tumble last year after admitting it cheated on fuel-economy ratings for several nameplates sold in Japan. The scandal opened the door for Nissan to step in.

Mann's fixes are coming straight out of Ghosn's playbook.

As Ghosn did when he arrived from Renault to revive Nissan in 1999, Mann is rolling out dramatic cost cuts and seeking savings with the bigger partner. The rapid action put Mitsubishi on the path toward a slim ¥1 billion ($9.1 million) operating profit in the fiscal year ended March 31.

Whether Mann made it will be known when Mitsubishi releases earnings on May 9.

"We were quite successful," Mann said. "The direction was not to make a loss. If you look at Mitsubishi, we've never made a loss for more than 10 years. I thought it would be a damn shame if we made a loss. I haven't left many stones unturned in managing cost appropriately."

The plan to begin sharing costs with Nissan was pulled ahead of schedule. The two automakers had envisioned their cost sharing starting during the new fiscal year, running from April 1, 2017, to March 31, 2018, with projected synergies of up to $226.4 million. But Mann pulled forward $27.2 million to the year just ended.

Savings came from a spectrum of actions, such as sharing the cost of transporting Nissan and Mitsubishi vehicles from plants in Southeast Asia, using shared aftermarket parts warehousing, and from joint sales financing in some markets. Mitsubishi also renegotiated the procurement of some parts by offering a larger scale that included Nissan, Mann said.

Management challenges

Mann says his reboot will also hinge on five challenges on the soft side:

1. Motivating Mitsubishi workers to hang tough and work hard.

2. Giving the company direction and a goal to achieve.

3. Keeping the company focused on taking baby steps of progress.

4. Aligning all parts of the company to communicate better.

5. Instilling good discipline to keep the plan humming.

"We've got to motivate each other," he said. "Without motivation, we don't have anything."

In many ways, Mann was groomed for the Mitsubishi assignment.

As Nissan's chief performance officer until this post, Mann's task has been to lead Ghosn's global drive to improve Nissan's profit margin and plant productivity.

Mann helped Nissan get within striking range of Ghosn's goals before being dispatched to Mitsubishi, where he reports to longtime CEO Osamu Masuko who has stayed on.

"Sometimes, when you've got your head down, you understand the direction but don't necessarily believe you can achieve the end point," Mann said. "So what I'm trying to do is put an element of focus in there, in terms of one quarter at a time."

Mann's playbook:

• Immediately cut operating costs.

• Speed cost-sharing plans with Nissan.

• Increase the U.S. dealer network.

• Consider sourcing vehicles from Nissan.

• Consider building vehicles in North America again.

Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution: Still on Sale

After checking out Mitsubishi Canada's website, we noticed that the 2015 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution Final Edition still appears on it, and we can even build the car and get a price quote.

Announced in October 2015, the Final Edition celebrated the absolute end of the Evolution Series, which spanned ten generations from 1992 to, well, 2015. The Final Edition is based on the GSR version with its five-speed manual transmission, but output of its turbocharged, 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine was raised to 303 horsepower (up from 291) and 305 pound-feet of torque (up from 300).

A direct rival to the Subaru WRX STI, the Volkswagen Golf R and the Ford Focus RS, this commemorative edition also receives a black-painted roof, a front bumper cap and air vents painted in glossy black as well as BBS alloy wheels. Inside, the car gets red contrast stitching and Recaro sport seats.

According to the folks at Mitsubishi Motors of Canada, of the 350 units built of the 2015 Lancer Evolution Final Edition, there are still about 38 left. New, with a warranty and a new-car smell.

So, if you've always wanted to purchase one of these road and track beasts, before it's gone for good, it isn't too late. The MSRP of the 2015 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution Final Edition is set at $49,498 before freight and delivery charges.

Mitsubishi Hyaku Design Study Celebrates Marque's Centenary By Looking To The Future

http://www.carscoops.com/2017/05/mitsub ... study.html

Mitsubishi has long since fallen off our radar among the most noteworthy Japanese automakers. But with Nissan's patronage, it's bound for resurgence. And the turnaround couldn't come on a more auspicious occasion.

While the parent company has been around a lot longer, the unit known today as Mitsubishi Motors (founded as the Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Company) will mark its 100th anniversary this year. So to mark the occasion, designer Gabor Farkas has cooked up this rather slick design.

We've featured some of Farkas' past designs on this site before, and they've all focused on the same brand. But this latest project takes things in a rather more forward-looking direction.

Called the Hyaku concept (from the Japanese for “100”), the design study envisions a futuristic, self-driving electric coupe. Farkas has adopted the traditional Japanese aesthetic approach of “Shibui,” with clean, minimalistic lines unadorned by any extraneous elements. So while the LED strips and chrome details suggest Mitsubishi's signature grille design, it doesn't actually need one. The pillarless windows open unobstructedly, the sensors are hidden, and there's no extra aero appendages tacked on like you might find on, say, a Lancer Evo - which is likely to remain our favorite of Mitsubishi's products for the foreseeable future.

The design also takes advantage of its compact electric powertrain components to allow for ample luggage space under the front hood while giving the vehicle a dynamic silhouette reminiscent of a classic grand tourer - or, in the designer's words, a high-speed Shinkansen train. All this in a form closer in size to a Nissan GT-R than a 370Z, for comparison's sake. And who knows, with the expertise of the Renault-Nissan Alliance in electric vehicles to bring to bear, it may not be that far off.
