Mitsubishi, Nissan to share pick-up platform – exec

Mitsubishi and Nissan are looking into the possibility of jointly-developed pick-up trucks for the Southeast Asian region, a senior executive said in a Reuters report. The move is said to encourage savings within the Renault-Nissan Alliance, which recently acquired Mitsubishi following Nissan’s purchase of a 34% stake in the Japanese carmaker.

Mitsubishi chief operating officer Trevor Mann said future replacements for the Nissan Navara and Mitsubishi Triton could share the same underpinning, albeit with their own distinct styling. This is similar to what is accomplished by the Renault Alaskan and the Navara NP300.

However, Mann says Mitsubishi’s pick-up platforms, not Nissan’s, will most likely be the basis for future Alliance models. “If you look at our cost performance in that region, we are the benchmark within the Alliance. Our four-by-four technology, our cost base on pickups is better than Nissan’s,” he said.

In reference to the Thailand market, Nissan and Mitsubishi’s plants currently produce ladder frame-based pick-up trucks and cars on separate lines. The move to a common architecture will allow Mitsubishi’s facility to focus on pick-ups, while Nissan will focus on building cars and SUVs. Mann says this could help increase productivity on both sides, but nothing has been decided currently.

Previously, the Alliance’s members have agreed to consolidate all of its electric vehicle platforms, which will help reduce the cost of electric vehicles by utilising scale of economies. Renault and Mitsubishi will use the platform which forms the basis of the next-generation Nissan Leaf electric vehicle.

Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance could co-develop next Patrol, Pajero

Nissan and Mitsubishi could team up for the next-generation of large SUVs.
Nissan is looking to take advantage of its recent acquisition of Mitsubishi by co-developing large SUVs with its new strategic partner. Nissan purchased a controlling stake in Mitsubishi in late 2016.

Product development is a huge expenditure for automakers, so it makes sense that Nissan is already exploring ways to save money through its new partnership. The most obvious area of overlap between the two companies is large SUVs — Nissan has the Patrol (sold here as the Armada) while Mitsubishi currently sells the full-size Pajero in other global markets. Moreover, both models are advancing in age and will soon need a total overhaul.

According to Trevor Mann, chief operating officer for Mitsubishi, Nissan and Mitsubishi are currently discussing the development of the next Patrol and Pajero as a joint project. Nissan would likely handle most of the platform development while Mitsubishi would offer its expertise in plug-in hybrid drivetrains.

"How to make this work is something that we are working on because that segment is coming under increasing pressure in terms of CO2 compliance," Mann told Motoring on the sidelines of the recent Geneva Motor Show. "It is a big, heavy vehicle. One of the things that we need to look at is what are the benefits that we could have in terms of sustaining that product if we were to work with Nissan. That is something we will be exploring."

He continued: "One of the things you need with a vehicle like that is high torque and one of the things you get with an electric motor is high torque. The solution has to be technically along that direction."

A timeline for the new SUV twins hasn't been nailed down yet, but it'll likely be a few years before we see either. The Nissan Patrol was last redesigned in 2010 while the Mitsubishi Pajero hasn't seen a ground-up redesign since 2000.

New Mitsubishi Montero could be developed alongside next Nissan Armada

http://www.motorauthority.com/news/1098 ... thority%29

Having successfully acquired Mitsubishi last fall, the newly minted Renault Nissan Mitsubishi Alliance is now drawing up a future product plan that will see closer integration of the three automakers’ respective lineups. The product plan is to be finalized by the end of March and is expected to include a redesigned Mitsubishi Pajero, a vehicle previously sold in the United States as a Montero.

The current generation of the rugged off-roader is both long in the tooth and in need of efficiency gains. It’s an affliction shared by a similar vehicle at Nissan, the Patrol, sold here as the Armada.

Speaking with Motoring at last week’s 2017 Geneva auto show, Mitsubishi Chief Operating Officer Trevor Mann said models like the Pajero and Patrol make sense given the strong demand for SUVs worldwide. But he added that the vehicles will need some form of electrification to make them meet tightening emissions regulations, and this will be costly to add. A promising solution he hinted at would be to develop successors for the Pajero and Patrol together.

There was no mention of a successor for the Infiniti QX80, the current version of which is related to the current Nissan Patrol. There’s the possibility that a redesigned QX80 could also be developed alongside redesigned versions of the Pajero and Patrol to further spread the investment.

Mitsubishi has been hinting at a new Pajero since the reveal of the GC-PHEV full-size SUV concept at the 2013 Tokyo auto show. More recently, the automaker has launched the mid-size Pajero Sport, though sadly the vehicle doesn’t comply with U.S. regulations and thus can’t be sold here as a new Montero Sport.

Search for synergies delays Mitsubishi products

Outlanders under review as Nissan alliance takes hold

http://www.autonews.com/article/2017032 ... 3E408633FC

TOKYO -- Mitsubishi has delayed the long-awaited next-generation redesigns of its Outlander crossover and Outlander Sport compact crossover, key pillars of its U.S. lineup, as engineers seek ways to share components with Nissan vehicles, supplier sources say.

The delay marks one of the first impacts the new Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance could have on the U.S. market and is a blow to U.S. Mitsubishi dealers clamoring for new product.

The next-generation Outlander had been scheduled for launch in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2019, while the redesigned Outlander Sport was due the following year.

Now, the Outlander is expected in late 2019 or early 2020, while the Outlander Sport has been pushed back until after 2020, one supplier executive involved with the programs said.

Both vehicles are under review as Mitsubishi and Nissan search for ways to share parts and architecture with the Nissan Rogue and Rogue Sport crossovers, another supplier executive said.

The goal is to commonize underpinnings and components not visible to the consumer so the vehicles can save money while maintaining an outer identity distinct to each brand, the supplier executives said.

The holdup underscores the urgency with which Carlos Ghosn, chairman of both Nissan Motor Co. and Mitsubishi Motors Corp., is trying to deliver shared savings between the companies. As head of the Renault-Nissan Alliance, he engineered Nissan's purchase of a controlling stake in Mitsubishi last year, building a global auto empire with sales approaching 10 million units.

Thanks to the addition of Mitsubishi's 2016 global sales of 934,013 vehicles, the alliance's global volume surged to 9.96 million vehicles in 2016, falling just a hair short of third-place GM.

Now the focus turns to combining programs, slashing costs and promoting efficiencies.

In announcing Nissan's takeover of Mitsubishi, Ghosn outlined plans to reap savings of 49 billion yen ($427.1 million) in the next fiscal year through joint manufacturing, product sharing, combined purchasing and other combined operations that spread costs over higher volumes.

North America impact

At the time, little was said about ways the partnership could impact North America.

Mitsubishi confirmed product plans are under review but declined to comment on any delays.

"Now we are reviewing our future product lineup in order to maximize the alliance synergy effect," spokesman Tetsuji Inoue said. "We will announce this matter at an appropriate time."

At this month's Geneva auto show, Mitsubishi COO Trevor Mann told Reuters that Mitsubishi and Nissan may also pool components and manufacturing of the next-generation Nissan Navara and Mitsubishi Triton pickups, both geared toward emerging markets.

Mitsubishi's U.S. dealers have yet to be told of any delays related to the next-generation Outlander or Outlander Sport. Mann visited California earlier this year to meet with dealers and no such delay was discussed, Joe Bizzarro, chairman of Mitsubishi's national dealer advisory board, told Automotive News.

A longer wait for the redesigned Outlander duo could eat into Mitsubishi sales at a time when demand for crossovers is soaring. The Outlander -- Mitsubishi's No. 2 seller in the U.S. in 2016 -- was last redesigned in 2012 and freshened for 2016. The Outlander Sport -- Mitsubishi's best-selling model in the U.S. -- hasn't had a full model change since its 2010 introduction. It received a light update for 2016.

Though dealers may have to wait longer for the full-model changes, revamps that draw from the best of the Mitsubishi and Nissan toolboxes could deliver better performance and lower costs. Dealers can also take solace in the fact that other fresh product is on the way.

The new Eclipse Cross, a coupe-styled crossover that will slot between the Outlander and Outlander Sport, debuted at the Geneva show and is due in the U.S. in early 2018.

Dealers can also find relief in Mitsubishi serving as one of the few value-oriented brands in the U.S. market -- Scion has been folded into Toyota, Suzuki pulled out of the market and Hyundai and Kia have cast their eye upmarket.

Mitsubishi management changes remake automaker in Nissan's image

http://www.autonews.com/article/2017031 ... sans-image

TOKYO -- Nissan Motor Corp., the most international and diverse of Japan's automakers, is increasing its stamp on new alliance partner Mitsubishi Motor Corp. though a new management shuffle that puts more foreigners and a woman into top executive slots.

The personnel changes, announced Tuesday, aim to align Mitsubishi's management structure with that of its top shareholder and give it a broader outlook, Mitsubishi CEO Osamu Masuko said in a conference call. Mitsubishi will also bring onboard several Nissan executives.

Mitsubishi is overhauling everything from the board room to the factory floor as part of its integration into the Renault-Nissan alliance. It came into the fold last October when Nissan's completed its $2.29 billion purchase of a controlling stake in the fellow Japanese carmaker.

The latest personnel changes remakes Mitsubishi's leadership in Nissan's image as a more international company, one that offers more opportunity to women and one that promotes workers on performance rather than Japan's traditional system based blindly on seniority.

"We will make this year the first year for creating a more diverse corporate culture and aim to wean off from the seniority-based system," Masuko said of the changes, effective April 1.

Under the new system, three of the top 27 executives will be non-Japanese, and Mitsubishi will also get its first female vice president, Yasuko Takazawa, in charge of legal affairs.

Before, Mitsubishi had only one non-Japanese executive. Chief Operating Officer Trevor Mann, of the UK, had been dispatched from Nissan to Mitsubishi in October.

Mitsubishi is adding also six more Nissan executives to its roster in the latest change.

They include Vincent Cobee, currently Nissan's corporate vice president in charge of the global Datsun brand. He will join Mitsubishi as the corporate vice president responsible for product strategy. Cobee will be succeeded as head of Datsun by Jose Roman, currently a division vice president for marketing and sales in Latin America.

Also, joining Mitsubishi will be Naoya Fujimoto, a Nissan corporate vice president for product development. Fujimoto will be a corporate vice president for project management.

Guillaume Cartier, Nissan's senior vice president of sales and marketing in Europe, will come to Mitsubishi as corporate vice president in charge of global marketing and sales.

Mitsubishi will also lean on Nissan's purchasing prowess with the addition of Takahide Tsujitani as corporate vice president for alliance procurement. He previously worked on purchasing at Nissan, coordinating joint procurement with alliance partner Renault.

Masuko said Mitsubishi and Nissan are working hard to identify areas of combined cost savings and other efficiencies and hope to announce concrete proposals by year’s end.

Mitsubishi delaying next-gen Outlander, Sport?

http://www.leftlanenews.com/mitsubishi- ... 95066.html

The company has reportedly stalled the projects to share more parts with Nissan's next-generation Rogue lineup.

Mitsubishi has reportedly delayed its next-generation Outlander and Outlander Sport.

The company has stalled both projects by at least six months as it works to deepen its parts-sharing efforts with Nissan, several unnamed supplier executives told Automotive News.

The redesigned Outlander was initially expected to arrive early in 2019, followed by the new Sport in 2020. The former is now said to be slated for late 2019 or early 2020, while the latter is believed to be pushed to 2021 or beyond.

If the report is accurate, the Outlander siblings will be among the first Mitsubishi models to be transformed in light of Mitsubishi's new role as part of the Renault-Nissan alliance.

Engineers are presumably attempting to determine the best mix of shared components that can be used in both the Outlanders and the next Nissan Rogue and Rogue Sport.

AN's sources claim any commonalities will be invisible to most consumers, as both brands will continue to have separate aesthetic identities.
