Mitsubishi crossover expected in Geneva
Mitsubishi will debut a compact crossover to be positioned between the Outlander and Outlander Sport in March at the Geneva auto show, according to European press reports.
The British magazine Autocar says the vehicle may be styled after the XR-PHEV concept first shown at the 2013 Tokyo auto show. Although nothing has been confirmed, the all-new vehicle is expected to be a natural fit for the booming U.S. crossover segment.

All purpose workhorses - 14 of the best 4x4 options.
Cathal Doyle runs the rule over the best 4x4/crossover motoring options for farmers
Few owners expect as much from their vehicles as farmers. From towing to carrying heavy loads, and operating on all kinds of surfaces from tarmac to open field, farm SUVs 4x4s really are expected to do it all.
Share
Commercial versions of SUVs dominate the sector, but there's an increasing choice thanks to the growth in popularity of the crossover/SUV segment in the consumer market, with many offered in two or four/five seat versions that qualify for commercial vehicle road tax.
Also growing in popularity are pick-ups, and with a host of new models launched in the last year, that trend can be expected to continue.
At the top end, these workhorses are expected to pull up to 3.5 tonnes, have a payload of at least half a tonne, and will often come with a low ratio gearbox to maximise towing and off-road capabilities.
Heavy-duty models such as the Toyota Land Cruiser, Mitsubishi Pajero and Land Rover Discovery have dominated the segment, but it's well worth casting an eye around at alternatives, particularly if maximum towing capacity isn't a requirement. These smaller 4x4s will have lower running costs, yet are well capable of handling the daily wear and tear of farming life.
Here we take a look at what commercial 4x4 models are currently on offer, including pick-ups.
Dacia
The Duster has built a strong reputation for affordable practicality. Although the two seater commercial is priced the same as equivalent passenger models, it still represents excellent value for money. Two wheel drive versions start from €16,690, while a farming friendly 4x4 version, priced at €20,690, offers decent off-road capability.
Fiat
A new arrival to the pick-up market is Fiat with the launch of the Fullback pick-up. With a payload of up to 1 tonne, and able to tow up to 3.1 tonnes, the Mitsubishi derived machine is more than capable of tackling tough jobs. It’s priced from €30,750.
Ford
A new Kuga Utility recently went on sale. The four-seater Commercial is available in FWD from €32,345 or 4WD at €38,000. 120PS 1.5 TDCi and 150 PS 2.0 TDCi engines provide power. A new Ford Ranger launched in 2016 has been impressing with a 1.4 tonne payload and towing capability of up to 3.5 tonnes. Double cab versions start at €35,250
Great Wall
For anyone in the market for a value-for-money pick-up, the Great Wall Steed is worth checking out. The Chinese machine is offered from €28,329. A 143 PS 2.0 diesel allows it to pull up to 2.5 tonnes and carry up to 1,050kg.
Hyundai
Ireland’s best-selling car, the Tucson, also comes as a two-seater commercial, including a 4WD version powered by the more powerful 2.0 CRDi diesel — it’s priced at €34,995. The Santa Fe Commercial offers a spacious load area and useful payload of 660kg, and can tow up to 2.5 tonnes. 4WD Executive Commercial models are priced from €41,995.
Kia
Kia’s two commercials share many of the same attributes as their Hyundai cousins. However, the Sportage Commercial comes in 2WD only. The 4WD Sorento represents good value for money, with a price starting at €38,995.
Land Rover
The Discovery, in five-seater Commercial guise, has been a huge sales success over the past few years. However, with an all-new model arriving this spring, Land Rover Ireland has confirmed that there will not be a five-seater N1 model - rear door dimensions are putting paid to that. They’re hoping to produce a two-seater version, though it’s unlikely to go on sale before 2018. Also having its final curtain call in 2017 is the venerable Defender, perhaps the ultimate off-road workhorse.
Mitsubishi
The Pajero has long been a favourite for heavy-duty farming work, offering robustness and a powerful 3.2 litre 200 PS DI-D diesel engine. Choose from Commercial versions in SWB (with 3-tonne towing capacity) or LWB which can pull up to 3.5-tonnes, or the 5-seater Executive version. A €3,000 Winter Bonus trade-in deal is currently being offered on Commercial versions. Prices from €37,950.
The Outlander Business comes in both diesel (€32,250) and plug-in-hybrid PHEV (€49,900) versions. With an efficient 150bhp 2.2 engine and 2-tonne towing capability, the 4x4 diesel version is a popular alternative to heavier SUVs.
Nissan
A 4WD Qashqai Van can return up to 55mpg, but is capable of towing up to 1.8 tonnes. It’s priced from €30,300. The larger X-Trail Van offers useful load space, but otherwise it might be worth looking at the 5-seater passenger version which currently undercuts the van’s €37,650 asking price by €2,650.
Winner of the Pick-up of the Year 2016, the latest Navara has a unique selling point over rivals in that it comes with 5-link rear suspension instead of the usual leaf springs. It boasts 3.5 tonnes towing capacity and over 1 tonne payload with 160bhp and 190 bhp 2.3 diesel engines. Prices from €34,995.
Skoda
You might not associate Skoda with commercial vehicles but the two seater Yeti Sherpa offers a useful 1,760 litres of interior space and a towing capacity of 2.2 tonnes. And 4x4 versions start from €24,195.
Ssangyong
With 2-seater and 5-seater commercial offering, Ssangyong’s Rexton is worth consideration for those needing some serious performance. Capable of towing up to 2.6 tonnes via a 2.2 litre 155PS diesel engine, it can also carry up to 642kg. Also worth looking at is the Korando ECX Commercial, an all-wheel driver version of the compact crossover. And occupying a market niche of its own is the Korando Sports, a low-slung pick-up which may not have the ground clearance of other vehicles in this segment, but can still carry a standard Euro pallet, and tow up to 2.3 tonnes.
Subaru
Subaru is synonymous with all-wheel-drive technology, so you can be sure both the XV Commercial and Forester Commercial will be able to do the business off-road. A generous 1,270 litres of cargo space belies the compact size of the XV, while the 2 seater Forester can tow a respectable two tonnes. Subaru’s characteristic Boxer diesel engine provides decent power. Prices from €32,995 for the XV Commercial and €34,795 for the Forester Van.
Toyota
Such is its popularity, the Land Cruiser Commercial has virtually achieved ubiquitous status within the farming community. Renowned for its toughness and durability, a new 2.8 litre diesel engine has improved fuel efficiency. It’s available in short and long wheel base 2-seater Commercial versions priced from €40,950 and €42,950 respectively, and LWB 5-seater Business and Platinum models priced from €57,995.
The Hilux pick-up also has an enviable reputation for toughness, and an all-new model builds on that ruggedness while offering better refinement. Double-cab versions can now pull up to 3.2 tonnes, while an enlarged deck area can carry up to one tonne payload. Prices for double cab versions are from €36,500
Volkswagen
A five-seat Commercial version of the new Touareg offers refinement with strong performance thanks to a 262bhp 3.0 V6 diesel engine that can pull up to 3.5 tonnes and has a payload of 770 kg. It’s priced from €62,570. Meanwhile for the ultimate in pick-ups, Volkswagen has launched the new V6 powered Amarok. It delivers up to 224bhp and can tow up to 3.5 tonnes, with prices from €37,450.

Mitsubishi dealers await impact of Nissan
With the Nissan alliance, strong cross-over sales and future-product announcements, Mitsubishi dealers had an exciting 2016. Now, dealers are waiting to see how the changes will affect them this year and beyond.
In October, Nissan Motor Co. folded Mitsubishi Motors Corp. into the Renault-Nissan Alliance, with Carlos Ghosn as chairman of the still nominally independent Mitsubishi.
"It's probably the most positive news we've received from the Mitsubishi brand in a decade," said Ryan Gremore, chairman of the Mitsubishi National Advisory Board in 2015 and 2016 and general manager of O'Brien Mitsubishi of Normal in Illinois.
Mitsubishi didn't need to be saved, Gremore added, but it needed some help.
Ghosn "knows that the potential with Mitsubishi is great and that the alliance can create some real synergy and some real dynamic power between these two great companies," Gremore said.
Still, U.S. Mitsubishi dealers are waiting to learn how the alliance will affect them, he said. "You've got to get this U.S. market fed. You've got to contribute to them and keep us engaged and feeling the love," Gremore said.
Last year, Mitsubishi's crossover sales grew with the Outlander and Outlander Sport. Gremore expects sales in that market to continue to increase when the Outlander PHEV and an unnamed crossover come out this year.
When the National Advisory Board was asked which product was missing from Mitsubishi's lineup, "We all said, "small truck,'" Gremore said. The Triton L200, which is built outside the U.S., would be a successful product here, he said.
Overall, Mitsubishi treats its dealers very well, Gremore said.
"They know that we're their best client, their only client, and they treat us like that," he said. "Are they perfect? No. But is there a sincere effort to have an open, trusting, communicative relationship? One hundred percent. They get an A."

Exec: Alliance could benefit from Mitsubishi dealers
DETROIT -- Mitsubishi Motors Corp.'s alliance with Nissan Motor Co. has sparked speculation about the two automakers sharing parts, vehicles or production capacity. But Mitsubishi's No. 2 executive in North America says it also could benefit Mitsubishi dealers.
Mitsubishi Motors North America COO Don Swearingen, speaking at a press event ahead of the Detroit auto show in early January, said the two brands are committed to keeping their vehicle designs distinct and separate.
Mitsubishi and Nissan still are examining areas for possible cooperation following Nissan's Oct. 20 purchase of a controlling 33.4 percent stake in its Japanese rival. In December, Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn became chairman of Mitsubishi Motors Corp.
Swearingen affirmed that the two automakers are likely to share parts, as both sides have said previously. But when asked about other possible areas for cost-sharing, he repeatedly said that options are under review.
Swearingen mentioned two areas that could affect dealerships.
First, he said it is quite likely the two companies will find ways to share vehicle-transportation costs, whether in shipping cars from Japan to the U.S. or from the port to the dealership.
Second, he mentioned training, particularly for service technicians.
"We have training facilities. They have training facilities," he said. "Maybe we can share some of that."
If Mitsubishi could occasionally use Nissan's training facilities, that would help in two ways. Currently, if Mitsubishi wants to conduct a training session in an area where it doesn't have facilities, it has to rent hotel rooms.
Moreover, using a Nissan facility that's closer to Mitsubishi dealerships could result in higher attendance by Mitsubishi technicians. "The key" to effective training, Swearingen said, "is getting close to the stores."
On the other hand, Swearingen said the alliance doesn't necessarily mean more U.S. business for Nissan Motor Acceptance Corp. -- yet.
Mitsubishi will honor the remaining five years of its contract with Ally Financial Inc. for consumer financing, he said.
But asked whether Mitsubishi might turn more to Nissan's captive for floorplanning or other forms of dealership financing, Swearingen said, "Everything's on the table." He didn't say whether Nissan Motor Acceptance Corp. or Ally would get the nod from Mitsubishi after the current retail-financing contract with Ally ends.
Mitsubishi and Ally have an agreement through April 2022 that names Ally as Mitsubishi's preferred provider for financial services, according to an Ally spokeswoman. As such, Mitsubishi endorses Ally as the preferred choice to provide retail, lease and commercial financing to its dealerships.
A spokeswoman for Nissan North America referred queries to Mitsubishi.

Mitsubishi's Qashqai Rival To Be Dubbed Eclipse
At March’s Geneva Motor Show, Mitsubishi will premiere its rival to the Nissan Qashqai and thanks to a UK publication’s review of a prototype, we have some juicy new details about the model.
According to Auto Express, the new Mitsubishi SUV will likely be dubbed the Eclipse and have a design closely mimicking the bright red XR-PHEV Concept II from the Geneva Motor Show in 2015. That means that the Eclipse will include the same sleek roofline, aggressive front fascia and edgy panels.
Beneath the skin, a shortened version of the Outlander’s platform can be found but it has been lightened and strengthened for the Eclipse. Additionally, the SUV comes standard with a multi-link rear axle and the availability of the company’s electronically controlled S-AWC all-wheel drive system that allows torque to be funnelled to the wheel with the most grip.
Although details about the full range of engines isn’t known at this early stage, a new 1.5-liter turbo petrol mated to a CVT and four-wheel drive could prove the most popular. A 2.2-liter diesel will also be available as will front-wheel drive options and a six-speed manual.
Stay tuned for more details about the Mitsubishi Eclipse in the coming weeks.

How Bow Dat? A Mitsubishi Lancer In Lamborghini And Ferrari Drag
If Dr. Phil could talk to vehicles, we’d imagine he’d have a lot to say with this very abused confused Mitsubishi Lancer sedan that’s flaunting a Lamborghini Veneno-ish fascia and a Ferrari 458-inspired rear end. Complimentary Greddy decals are also included.
The Mitsughini Lancerrari (or does Mitsubari Lancorghini sound better?) looks like something a designer from the Gran Theft Auto racing game would make after a particularly epic booze binge.
The uploader over at Imgur doesn’t share any specific information about the car, but the window and door lines suggest this is a fifth-generation Lancer built from the late 1990s to early 2000s.
It also seems to have its steering wheel on the right-hand side, so it could be located in Australia or the U.K. If you happen to know anything about it, please do tell in the comments.
We’d like to believe that the owner did not ruin a Lancer Evolution to build this freakishly looking contraption – not that we haven’t seen something like that before, as some of you might remember that crazy 1993 Subaru Impreza WRX with the BMW 5-Series buttocks and Audi A4 face from a few years back.
