Mitsubishi’s Recalling Another 227k Vehicles In The US

https://www.carscoops.com/2018/02/mitsu ... hicles-us/

We thought it was a pretty big deal for Mitsubishi, relatively speaking, when it issued a recall for over 140,000 vehicles. But now the same manufacturer has issued another two recalls that amount to another 226,995 units.

The larger of the two affects certain Outlander and Outlander Sport crossovers. The problem here comes down to the actuator shaft for the parking brake, which could be prone to corrosion due to water leaking into the rear brake calipers. That could render the parking brake inoperable, leaving the vehicle to roll away unexpectedly.

To address the problem, Mitsubishi is asking the owners of certain 2014-16 Outlanders and 2013-16 Outlander Sports to bring their vehicles in to their local dealers. There technicians will inspect the rear brakes and replace certain components if necessary. That already amounts to an estimated 170,354 vehicles across the United States… but there’s more.

At the same time, the Japanese automaker is notifying the owners of various models to bring their vehicles in to have the sunroof glass assemblies. The sunroofs could detach while under way, posing a severe hazard to other vehicles on the road. Models affected include certain 2007-10 Outlander, 2008-10 Lancer, 2009-10 Lancer Evolution, and 2010 Lancer Sportback models.

That may seem like a wide array of models. But since that second recall only affects those models fitted with sunroofs, it only affects an estimated 56,641 vehicles in the US.

Combined with the previous recall issued just the other day, that brings the total number of vehicles being recalled up to 368,048. (That is, assuming none of the vehicles being recalled will have to be serviced for more than one issue at a time.) Either way, that’s a heck of a lot of vehicles being recalled by a manufacturer that sold just 103,686 units in America last year. And that marked a ten-year high.

With the scope of recalls ranging from 2006 through 2016, we’re looking at nearly half the 922,766 vehicles that Mitsubishi sold over the course of those eleven years.

Shock as car bursts into flames

https://www.odt.co.nz/regions/north-ota ... sts-flames

A motorist on a highway near Oamaru came in for a shock this afternoon when his vehicle broke down then burst into flames.

Two appliances from Weston were called to extinguish the blaze, at Totara, south of Oamaru.

Emergency services were called to the scene, at the intersection of State Highway 1 and Station Rd, shortly after 3pm.

The car, a 2004 Mitsubishi Lancer, was well involved by the time firefighters arrived and took about 30 minutes to get under control.

One lane of the highway was closed while the fire was extinguished, with police controlling the flow of traffic.

The owner and sole occupant of the car was travelling north from Dunedin to Christchurch when the vehicle broke down before it burst into flames shortly after he pulled over to the side of the road.

Mitsubishi quarterly profit surges on Asia growth, weak yen

http://www.autonews.com/article/2018020 ... h-weak-yen

TOKYO -- Mitsubishi Motors more than doubled its operating profit in the last quarter as higher sales in Asia and a weaker yen helped the automaker recover from last year's mileage cheating scandal.

The automaker raised its full-year forecast for operating profit to jump nearly 19-fold to 95 billion yen ($864.97 million) as it sees a more positive impact from currency movements than initially expected.

It also raised its full-year dividend forecast to 17 yen per share from its previous forecast for 14 yen, and projects a net profit of 100 billion yen, reversing a 198.5 billion yen loss last year.

Mitsubishi reported an operating profit of 20.4 billion yen in October-December, surging from 8.4 billion yen last year when it grappled with the financial fallout of an admission that it had overstated the mileage of some models.

Mitsubishi Motor's rosy outlook reflects its rebound from the scandal as well as expectations of further growth in Asia and cost savings from its alliance with Nissan, which took a 34 percent stake in the automaker in 2016.

Under its three-year strategy plan unveiled in October, Mitsubishi Motors plans to boost annual global sales by 30 percent, focusing on growth in Southeast Asia, China and the United States.

It also seeks a comeback in Japan, where sales were suspended for some months in 2016 after the mileage scandal, and plans to ramp up capital spending and r&d investment, aiming to raise competitiveness in new technologies including electric vehicles.

As part of the alliance that includes Nissan and Renault, Mitsubishi Motors is also targeting cost-savings of more than 100 billion yen over the next three years due to development and procurement efficiencies.

Thank you, Mitsubishi

Call it the Mitsubishi effect.

Carlos Ghosn's Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance leapfrogged Volkswagen Group and Toyota Motor to become the world's top-selling automaker in 2017 — and the 2016 acquisition of a controlling stake in Mitsubishi made all the difference.

Without Mitsubishi's 2017 sales of 1.03 million units, the French-Japanese alliance would have been No. 3. But add Mitsubishi's cool million to Nissan Motor's record 5.82 million sales and Renault's 3.76 million and the alliance total comes to 10.61 million light vehicles.

That bested 10.53 million at VW Group, 2016's top seller, which also includes the Audi, Skoda, Seat and Porsche brands.

Toyota Motor, which held the No. 2 spot in 2016, posted group sales of 10.2 million vehicles last year, excluding its Hino Motors heavy trucks.

Now Is The Time For You To Buy A 1993 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution I

Mitsubishi's N.A. sales trim losses

http://www.autonews.com/article/2018021 ... rim-losses

TOKYO — Mitsubishi Motors Corp.'s profits surged on higher sales and favorable foreign currency rates in the last three months of 2017, although losses in North America continued to hold the company back.

Its operating loss in North America shrank to ¥3.0 billion ($26.6 million) in the October-December period, an improvement from $64.8 million in losses a year earlier.

The improvement came as North American retail sales expanded 13 percent to 36,000 vehicles in the quarter. Mitsubishi's worldwide sales were even better, growing 18 percent to 279,000 vehicles in the period.

In announcing the results last week, CFO Koji Ikeya said Mitsubishi's momentum in North America will pick up thanks to the introduction late last year of the Outlander PHEV plug-in hybrid crossover and this year's debut of the Eclipse Cross compact crossover. Both new products tap red-hot demand for light trucks.

But a booming business in China and Southeast Asia powered more than a doubling of parent-level operating profit in the quarter.

Mitsubishi's global operating profit jumped to $181.1 million in the company's fiscal third quarter from $74.6 million the year before. Net income more than tripled to $192.6 million from $55.9 million in the previous October-December period.

Revenue increased to $5.06 billion from $4.23 billion.

The year-earlier financial results reflected the hammering Mitsubishi sales took when it revealed that misconduct had occurred in fuel economy testing in Japan. Earnings in that period were further depressed by outlays associated with replacing defective Takata airbags, part of a global recall by nearly every major carmaker.

The absence of those negatives boosted earnings for the most recent quarter, as did rising sales and fresh savings from its new involvement in the Renault-Nissan alliance.

In the first three quarters of the fiscal year ending March 31, Mitsubishi notched $150.9 million in savings through its alliance participation, putting it on track to reach its goal of $221.9 million for the fiscal year.

"We have seen the effects of those efforts," Ikeya said. "We have maintained our V-shaped recovery."

Mitsubishi expects global retail sales to expand 18 percent to 1.09 million vehicles in the current fiscal year. North American sales are forecast to increase 8 percent to 156,000 vehicles. Volume in Asia should surge 35 percent to 425,000 units.

Mitsubishi-GAC venture to build engines in Changsha

http://www.autonewschina.com/en/article.asp?id=15936

GAC Mitsubishi Motors Co. broke ground this week for a plant in the central China city of Changsha that will produce up to 150,000 engines a year.

The factory will launch production in 2018 and will produce Mitsubishi's 2.0-liter and 2.4-liter naturally aspirated gasoline engines, according to GAC Mitsubishi.

GAC Mitsubishi, established in 2012, is a joint venture between Mitsubishi Motors Corp. and Guangzhou Automobile Group Co.

The partnership imports engines from Japan for three Chinese-built vehicles: the Mitsubishi Outlander, ASX and Pajero. That assembly plant is in the south China city of Guangzhou.

In 2016, the partnership's deliveries dipped 1 percent to 55,888 vehicles.
